Augen GENTOUCH NBA7800ATP 7-Inch Color Touch-Screen Tablet PC with Android 2.1 OS – Black Review

I have used the GenTouch78 for several weeks now, and have somewhat mixed feelings about it. On balance, this device is definitely worth purchasing *IF* are willing to do some of the work. Out of the box, with no effort on your part? You will likely want to send it back. Why? It has several negatives (with fixes in parentheses):

1. The resistive touchscreen is horribly slow and inaccurate (Updating with update 3 from the Augen website adds a calibration utility that dramatically improves things)
2. The battery life is mediocre – 2-2.5 hours (By adding a utility to put it in `airplane mode’ when not using wifi, you can extend the battery life to 4-5 hours pretty easily. The problem is caused by the direct port of Android. A HUGE amount of battery power is wasted on the unit trying to find a cell tower to connect to. This should be a relatively easy fix; I would expect it to be fixed within the next few months.)
3. The headset connector is 2.5 mm, so you cannot use standard headsets (Augen states they will send you a free adapter if you email them)
4. The Android Market app does not work (You can locate a great many .apk files online, and the update referenced above adds an alternative app store…far fewer apps, but it is something).
5. There is no accelerometer. You cannot (easily) switch from landscape to portrait mode (There is a workaround by using the included file manager to manually change the orientation)
6. The unit itself seems slow and unresponsive (The processor is a relatively slow processor, but you can significantly increase responsiveness by killing apps using a task manager, and by eliminating the `active’ wallpaper installed by default.)
7. The buttons are on the back, and their use is not immediately intuitive (In time, I have grown to think this is a very GOOD design choice. Your fingers fall naturally to them after you get used to it, but it does take some time).

If you resist the urge and do NOT return it, and instead spend some time `fixing’ some of the flaws? What you end up with is pretty impressive for several reasons:

1. It is a very capable ebook reader (I have installed Alkido for free books, Kindle and Nook). It is basically the same price as a Nook or a Kindle, and it can do VASTLY more than either of those can.
2. The web browsing experience is very satisfying.
3. It handles media quite capably. YouTube videos look great, and music sounds acceptable, given the single speaker on the back.
4. It is quite light (12.2 ounces – half what an iPad weighs). This is important if you use it as an ebook reader. It fits very comfortably in one hand for extended periods.
5. It runs many apps quite well. I have chess, blackjack, several other games, some aviation apps, and text editors running on it.

This is clearly a first generation device. But is ALSO 1/3rd the cost of the cheapest iPad. It probably provides 60% of the utility of an iPad for 33% of the cost.

This device is getting better. It will continue to get better. If you don’t mind putting in the effort, this is actually a very good buy. It isn’t an iPad. It’s not even really close to the beauty, speed, and elegance of the iPad. But it does many jobs, and does them well. If you can deal with this, then you will love this device. If not? You’re likely better off with an iPad. For me? I’m keeping mine…for 9, the ebook capabilities alone are worth the cost.

Apple iPad MC349LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi + 3G)

Posted by best buy on Nov 7, 2010 in samsung

Apple iPad MC349LL/A Tablet (16GB, Wifi + 3G) Review

I did a lot of research and even played with a few iPads before making my purchase, so I was not too surprised by its performance. I mainly got this because I can’t wait another 2-? years for my job to decide how they’re going to let us carry electronic publications. The iPad works great for that function, especially using GoodReader which I find to be superior to iBooks in a number of ways.

So far I haven’t been disappointed using it as an internet device in my home and offline in most other places. Overall it is basically what you expect: an oversized iPhone with similar features. Web pages look much better than they do on the iPhone, but there’s still no built-in flash support. Angry Birds is a lot more fun on the iPad’s big screen.

One thing I don’t like is the email presentation. It basically uses the same iPhone-sized strip overlayed on a full screen message display. There’s no way to just be looking at your inbox or other folder; you have to always be looking at an email. It’s a minor annoyance, but different than I have my email setup on every other system including the iPhone.

I was also surprised to learn that the iPad is still on iOS 3 (so much for my research). I spent over an hour trying to create app folders on the device and in iTunes before I realized the iPad doesn’t have that ability yet. I’m disappointed with the number of apps that expect you to re-buy just to increase the resolution enough that full screen looks good. Most apps like that I continue to use in the small, iPhone-size window that opens by default or I put up with pixellation and hit the 2x button. I didn’t realize how quickly I’d gotten used to iOS4, but now it’s annoying when I click a link on one website that opens a new window, and upon returning to the original site it has to completely reload instead of saving my previous position. Hopefully iOS4 will be out this month for the iPad and it will function more like my iPhone.

If you’re going to throw your iPad in a flight bag, I recommend the Otterbox Defender case. It was covered by the tax savings I enjoyed by purchasing from Amazon instead of Apple. The case offers a lot of protection, but like its iPhone cousin makes the ports less accessible. You have to remove the back panel to access the charging port, and not all headphones are able to reach into the headphone jack. My wife and I wanted to watch a movie together using a y-cord, but it wasn’t able to fit without me removing the top half of the case.

Overall I’m pleased with the unit so far. I could have waited for another solution (Google Pad, maybe?), but as Apple’s already big in our lives and my work is likely moving to this unit, it was the best choice for me. If you’re thinking of buying an iPad, I don’t see why you’d buy anywhere but Amazon. Their list prices match the Apple store, but they add no tax or shipping charges. Tax in my area is 10% so I saved buying from Amazon instead of Apple.

Zenithink 10″ Touchscreen Android 2.1 Tablet (ePad) Review

I have had this thing for like a week now, It works great for the price, Obviously not an Ipad, but its like a third of the price. everything I expected and more. I read the review posted here by someone else to be careful when buying with out a return policy, I dont know where they bought it but the company I bought from, OFFERED a FULL GUARANTEE and RETURN POLICY. You have to be careful when you buy these cause some companies sell knock off Zenithink with cheap processors not the ZenithInk Processor. Make sure when you receive yours it has ZenithInk written on the Manual.

Overall Like I said, WORTH THE MONEY, NOT an IPAD, DEFINITELY COOL!!!!!
