Universal Language translators have been discussed and dreamed about for a hundred years now; machines that might know every world language; Imagine that? When will a Universal Hand-Held Internet Connected Device be readily available to handle all World Languages?
The Online Think Tank recently considered this question and one member stated; “This is an easy one because on Page 5 of SpeechTech Magazine in the October 2006 issue was an advertisement for “SpeechGear, Inc.” which has the capacity to instantly translate language anytime and anywhere onto Windows XP TabletPC Edition.”
Look up “Endurance TabletPC” and “Compradre” with SpeechGear. SpeechGear in their previous white papers explains their system is speech-to-speech language translation. Also, remember this was being talked about at TED Conference Last Year.
We can expect all this technology to miniaturized within the year and readily available to market in 2-years and it will be a hot seller, I think the smart VCs are already all over it. And In-Q-Tel and DARPA are seeing these technologies worthy for the challenges in Iraq. Apparently, a prototype of this is in use by troops in IRAQ now presently and some police departments and Border Patrol Agents as well.
