Lenovo Ideapad S10-3t 0651-85U 10.1-Inch Netbook Tablet (Black) Review
![]()
I was surprised by the size and weight. I thought it would be larger and heavier, but it’s about the same size and weight as the HP Mini 10.2″. My unit has the 4-cell battery, but it has Windows 7 Home Premium already installed which is a great trade-off. I purchased the larger battery from Lenovo and am still waiting for it. I immediately installed the 2GB memory upgrade. It was very easy to do. The hardest part of that process was unscrewing the back. The screws are embedded in the lid and do not come out, so they can’t get lost. The old memory card snapped out and the new one snapped in. The system recognized it and I was ready to go. The unit comes with functional versions of MS 2010 Word and Excel. You would have to purchase the full MS Office program if you want all the components. The Natural Touch program may take some getting use to. The Lenovo uses finger touch-a learning curve. I am very happy I can watch movies through an optional portable DVD drive. As soon as I can get to a wireless connection, I will download iTunes and transfer my files. The speakers exist, but the sound through headphones is great. Music sounds good and has good bass. My unit also came with the SIM card option. I will test that at a later date because I am overseas. I put a DecalGirl decal on the outside cover, but they only make them for the S10 and it is not the same size. Still, it is enough to protect the outside cover from scratches and fingerprints until they make one specifically for the S10-3T. If it weren’t for the difficulty I’m having in calibrating for finger touch, I would have given this a 5-star rating. The other drawback is it has only 2 USB ports, but I can get around that with a hub. I am going through the programs and getting rid of the ones I don’t want. I deleted MacAfee and installed Norton Antivirus. I originally purchased this through Best Buy online but it was on back order indefinitely. I watched the price on Amazon until it dropped to 7 and I bought it quickly. A week later the price jumped up again and stayed high due to high demand. Every store I went to was sold out. If I had known everything about this unit I know now, I would believe it was worth 0 but not more. A netbook should not cost so much. Overall, I’m glad I got this. I travel extensively and this is a wonderful alternative to lugging around a full laptop.

Lenovo S10-2 10.1-Inch White Netbook – Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

With the S10-2 Lenovo played a game of give and take.
On the outside, the netbook looks and feels cheap. Everything is plastic — even the metal looking bits. This makes for a very light netbook, and one that can survive a drop without much damage [speaking from experience]. Even the decorative colors look like a half-hearted attempt at dressing this device up. Finally, the battery has a hump in it that allows device to sit at an angle. This is a great feature because it allows the netbook too cool efficiently, but at the same time makes S10-2 a bit thick. If aesthetics are important to your computing devices this might not be the netbook for you.
The inside bits show where Lenovo paid attention. The keyboard, although not full size, is large enough type comfortably on, and the keys have excellent tactile feedback. The screen is glossy (but not overwhelmingly), responsive, and bright. My eyes say image quality on the screen isn’t as good as my Macbook Pro or Macbook, but on par with my Dell E6500. The camera is a 1.2 megapixel device with great image quality. The Intel GMA950 Graphics is plenty of GPU to do what this netbook is designed to do; surf the web, read e-mail, and video conferencing. Netbooks and laptops often exhibit signal interference from their own componentry when you listen to audio with good quality headphones/earbuds — not so with Lenovo S10-2. The audio components are excellent, even the tiny speakers perform well; in fact I would say the audio is better quality than all three of my afore mentioned laptops. Wired and wireless networking is just as fast and stable as all my other mobile networking devices. Finally, the N270 processor can perform all these tasks without the netbook feeling sluggish (if you use the correct OS), thanks to it’s dual core nature.
However, where the S10-2 falls flat is the choice in Operating Systems. I am a fan of Windows 7; it’s a solid operating system, and I enjoy using it on my Dell. However the “Starter” edition of Windows 7 is simply something Microsoft created to so you would pay for upgrade. It is too limited (unless your an advanced user, you won’t even be able to change your desktop background) it wants far more processor, more GPU, and more memory than this netbook can provide. A memory upgrade to 2GB will keep you from wanting to pull your hair out, but the real solution here is to change your OS to something designed to run small devices [not a task for non-technical users].

Lenovo S10-3t 0651-37U 10.1-Inch Multitouch Netbook (Black) Review

I’ve had this for 3 days and not played a lot with it so far, but felt like sharing the cost factor for people looking into this kind of a PC laptop.
I bought it from Amazon, because Lenovo’s site would take upto 5-9 business days to ship and I had to travel with this. It is indeed a better deal for my requirements after all, read on
.
First of all, this is an IdeaPad and not a ThinkPad, hence it is designed for home users and not enterprise.
This laptop has >> 166 MHz Atom Processor, 1 GB RAM, 250 GB HDD with 8 Cell Battery > 8 (no tax and free shipping)
Lenovo has the following standard packages.
A. [2 models different colors] Same Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HDD with 4 Cell Battery > For around 9 (if you use a eCoupon found on the internet) + Tax and Shipping. Hence around 0
To match this deal, you would need :
a.1. Replacement 2 GB RAM (since there is only 1 slot), Note: Atom processors support only upto 2GB. Add appx. .
a.2. Replacement 8 cell battery, appx. .
Total -> 0
B. [1 model ] Better processor 183 GHz, same RAM, same HDD with lesser 4 Cell Battery > + Cost + Tax and Shipping > appx 0
To match this deal, you would need :
b.2. Replacement 8 cell battery, appx. .
But since it ships with 2 GB standard, we can take the difference upto .
Total -> 0
I had 2GB RAM from my 17″-HP-paper-weight so worked out best.
PROs
* Its mostly-exactly what was expected.
* I like the touch-pad, I may not care for the multi-touch, but the feel and behavior is good.
* The construction material is good, given that I have never used an IdeaPad, my “ThinkPad” expectations were not shattered (yet).
* I configured the VeriFace and VeriTouch, they are cool (considering they are slow but they work).
CON(ishes)
* The wireless connection keeps dropping, this may be an issue with my tablet (I have 4 other computers at home and none have such issues), hope it gets resolved soon.
* “HD ready” is mis-leading, there is no HDMI connectivity.
* The bloatware on the first start is annoying.
* The McAfee takes up a lot of space, I uninstalled it.
* The OS (Windows 7 Starter) is a pain.
* If you run on batteries the laptop will run slow because of the power settings.
No comments on the touch yet!
For the price its awesome, I am beginning with a 4 star, perhaps more to come.
